The longer lead goes to positive, the flat spot points toward the cathode (negative). The current goes from the anode (positive) to the cathode (negative).
Isolated power supplies electrically isolate the input from the output, providing the benefits of galvanic isolation, safety compliance, elimination of ground loops, and a floating output.
Regulated power supplies maintain the output at a near constant level, regardless of power input and load fluctuations. Load regulation is the ability of a power supply to maintain a constant output (voltage or current) with varying current draw loads.   Line regulation is the ability of a power supply to maintain a constant output (voltage or current) with varying input voltage. The transient response relates to how quickly the power supply can react to variations in load and voltage input.
A buck converter produces a voltage output that is less than its input.
A boost converter increases the input DC voltage to a higher DC output.
A flyback converter is one of the simplest DC-DC converter topologies to include electrical isolation. Although limited to low power (100 W), the transformer provides galvanic isolation. (they may also be used for AC/DC conversion).
A Forward DC/DC Converter can supply output voltage either higher or lower than the input voltage. They utilize an isolation transformer, are good up to 200 W, and have high energy efficiency.
A Half-Bridge DC/DC Converter can supply output voltage either higher or lower than the input voltage. They utilize an isolation transformer, provide power up to 500 W, and are inexpensive.
If a DC-DC converter has a regulation rating of 1%, then the output voltage will not deviate more than 1% from the nominal value over the specified input voltage range and output current range.
The MPM3610 will convert 4.5 to 21 VDC down to 3.3V at 1.2 A continuous. Pin compatible with LM1117-3.3V TO-220. Excellent load and line regulation. 90 to 95% efficiency. ENable pin (pull low to shut down completely).
The LD1117 will convert 4.3 to 15 VDC to a clean 3.3 VDC with 1% regulation. The constant quiescent current draw is 5 mA. Maximum current supply is 800 mA if properly heat sinked. Use at least a 10 uF electrolytic capacitor on both the input and output for stability.
The L4931 will convert 5.4 to 20 VDC down to 5.0 VDC with 2% regulation. The constant 'quiescent' current draw is low (1 mA min, 5 mA @ 250 mA draw). Good for up to 300 mA with a proper heat sink. Use 10 uF (min 2.2 uF) electrolytic capacitors across both the input and output for stability.
The LM7805 series linear voltage regulators in the T0-220 package will convert 7 to 35 VDC down to 5.0 VDC () with 2% regulation. Current capability is typically 1.5A (for TO-220 package). There is a constant 'quiescent' current draw of 6 mA. Capacitors are not required for stability, but use at least 10 uF electrolytic capacitors across both the input and output.
The TSR 1-2433 is a step-down switching regulator that will output 3.3 VDC with loads up to 1000 mA with high efficiency (91%) and better than 2% accuracy. Add 10 uF capacitance on the input for additional stability. Low standby current of 2 mA. Voltage input of 4.75 to 36 VDC (9 VDC nominal). $6/ea. Other models available that output 5 VDC, 9 VDC, 12 VDC, etc. with similar performance.
For powering a Feather from a non-USB source, the input requirements are 4.5 to 5.5 VDC and at least 500 mA (1 A recommended). The TSR 1-2450E will accept a nominal input of 24 VDC (7 - 36 VDC) and output 1000 mA @ 5 VDC with 92% efficiency. Pinout is same as 78xx linear regulator (but larger footprint), and no capacitors required. For nominal 12 VDC power input (6.5 to 36 VDC), then the TSR 1-2450 provides 1000 mA @ 5 VDC with 94% efficiency, 2 mA standby current, and +/-2% output accuracy.
For powering a Arduino Uno or Mega from a non-USB source, the input recommendations for the Vin connection are 7 to 12 VDC and ??? mA (1 A recommended). The TSRN 1-2490 will accept 10.5 to 36 VDC and output 9 VDC with 95% efficiency. TSR 1-2490 will take a nominal voltage of 24 VDC (15 to 36 VDC) and output 9 VDC @ 1000 mA for the Arduino Vin pin.
The IEB01 will convert 4.5 to 5.5 (5.0 nominal) VDC to 3.3 V @ 303 mA with 74% efficiency, +/- 1.2% line regulation, +/- 1.5% load regulation, continuous short circuit protection with recovery, and 1.5 kV isolution. This is an isolated DC/DC converter.
The TEA 1-0505 converts 4.5 to 5.5 (5.0 nominal) VDC to 5.0 VDC @ 200 mA with 1.5 kV of voltage isolation.
Precision LM4040 Voltage Reference Breakout 2.048V and 4.096V is ideal for an analog input reference. 0.1% accuracy. Power input is 5 to 12 VDC (3 V if only 2.048 V reference is needed). Not a regulator.
5 V voltage reference LM4040AIZ-5.0/NOPB
10 V voltage reference LM4040AIZ-10.0/NOPB
Efficiency is key characteristic when selecting an AC to DC power supply. A switched-mode configuration increases efficiency.

AC/AC power supplies are transformers that can step-up or step-down an AC voltage. A single-phase transformer has two coils, one primary and the one secondary. Three-phase transformers contain six coils, one pair for each phase. Transformers are selected by the Power Rating, Maximum Primary Voltage, Maximum Secondary Voltage, and the Direct Current Resistance. The Direct Current Resistance is the measured resistance of the transformer’s windings when a test DC current is applied.
A circuit that converts DC to AC power is called an inverter.
The silver band on a diode points to the cathode side. A diode will allow current to flow from it's anode to cathode, but not in the opposite direction. Schottky diodes are used when the circuit switching is faster than 10 nanoseconds (they also have a very low forward voltage). Zener diodes (1N5818) are unusual in that they conduct reverse current at a particular reverse voltage threshold.
Chanzon 34 Values 0.5W Zener Diode Assorted Kit
When you have a high energy DC switching load such as a solenoid, put a 1N4001 or 1N4004 snubber / flyback diode as close as possible across the connection to that load.
1N4001 – 1N4007 series diodes are used in reverse polarity circuit protection. Schotty diodes are good for low voltage rectifier applications. Zener dioes are typically used to maintain a constant voltage by providing them with a constant current (via a series resistor).
Electrolytic capacitors tend have the NEGATIVE pin marked, but Tantalum caps have the POSITIVE pin marked.

Electrolytic capacitors are good to 20 kHz, then the effective capacitance drops to almost zero. After 20 kHz, try a X5% ceramic.
Most standard through-hole resistors are carbon-film or metal-film composition. Thick film surface mount resistors are less expensive and less precise than thin film.
Variable resistors are also called rheostats. A potentiometer have two internal resistors in series, creating an adjustable voltage divider. Normally a linear single turn motion is preferred. For a panel mount potentiometer, choose one with a T18 (18 spline) 5.5 mm shaft. (rotary encoders typically have a D shaft).
The resistor power rating is the maximum power a resistor should be asked to carry. Resistors more than 1 W are power resistors. P = i^2 * R = (V^2)/2

In general, TO-220 sized parts can dissipate about 1.5-2W without a heatsink.
A bipolar junction transistor (BJT) is current controlled. The base resistor needs to be carefully calculated for the BJT. A metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) is voltage controlled, and they have a high input impedence. A TIP120 or NPN Darlington transistor is a current controlled device that is used for amplification and power switching.
To use a N-Channel MOSFET as a switch, connect the source to ground, and apply a voltage to the gate to turn it on, othwise the gate should connect to ground through a pull-down resistor. The signal (voltage) to the gate should have the current limited by using a resistor in series to protect the microcontroller digital output. A pull-down resistor (to ground) should also be connected to insure the gate to the MOSFET will not float. The combination of the resistor in series with the signal (R1), and the pull-down resistor R2 is a voltage divider. The final voltage reaching the MOSFET gate through the voltage divider should be at least larger than the maximum Gate Threshold Voltage Vgs(th), and less than the abaolute maximum rating of the Gate-to-Source Voltage (typically +/- 20 V). Choose a R1 that produces a voltage larger than the maximum Gate Threshold Voltage Vgs(th), and requires the least amount of signal current (from microcontroller).
A P-Channel MOSFET has the source connected to the power rail (Vcc), and the gate is pulled to ground to allow current to flow, otherwise it is connected to Vcc through a pull-up resistor.
The IRLB8721 Power N-Channel MOSFET in a TO-220 package should be your first choice for switched ground digital output control. It has a very ultra-low gate impedance, minimizing the load on the microcontroller providing the signal, and the voltage loss is less than a TIP120. And it can switch loads up to a continuous current of 44 A at 30 VDC in high temperature environments. Use it with a TO-220 heat sink when currents exceed 15 A. The maximum continuous current and voltage are affected by the load, so carefully consult the datasheet and evaluate the limit relative to your application. Do not use in parallel because it is difficult to turn on multiple MOSFETs in a capacitive-resistive circuits. When you need higher voltage capability to 60 V and currents are under 30 A, choose a FQP30N06L.
A TIP120 is a NPN Darlington Power Transistor with a current gain of 1000. The gate is current controlled and therfore the resistor in series needs to be carefully selected relative to the load. Choose an N-Channel over the TIP120 for power switching applications. The high current gain is good for amplification applications.
The PN2222 NPN bipolar junction transistor (BJT) works well between a microcontroller digital output and another transistor or relay for the switching of the ground to another component. The signal applied to the base pin needs to be generally greater than 0.6 V and the current should be limited by a resistor in series with a value that generates a current between 1.0 to 10 mA, typically 1.0k to 3.3k ohms for 3.3 and 5.0 V signals (check what current your microcontroller digital output can source safely). For application where you are controlling the gate of another transistor (such as a P-Channel MOSFET), then it is often easier to use a FQP30N06L or BS170-D75Z because these have gates that are voltage controlled and don't need a unique resistor in series with the gate for every application.
Two MOSFETs suitable for 3.3 volt microcontrollers: The IRFZ44N is an N-channel device rated at 55V and RDS(on) resistance of 0.032 0hms max (mouser P/N 942-IRFZ44NPBF). The IRF4905 is a P-Channel device rated at 55 V and an RDS (on) of 0.02 ohms (mouser P/N 942-IRF4905PBF).
